Card prices are sourced from PriceCharting One Piece market data (USD), updated 3 September 2026. Pull rates come from a 3-case, 1,000+ pack community sample. Monte Carlo results use 100,000 simulated openings, seed 42. Prices are early post-launch figures and will move fast.
The Short Answer
At current sealed prices, OP17 box and case openings are technically slightly positive EV — about 1.19× for a box and 1.18× for a case — but that headline is a lottery, not a return. The median box loses −$222 (72.9% of boxes lose money) and the median case loses −$293 (55.4% of cases lose). The positive mean comes almost entirely from a handful of grail-tier cards: the ~$8,100 Rocks.D.Xebec grail, the ~$850 Diamond DON!! (est.), the ~$1,441 Four Emperors mangas, and the ~$371 Gold SPs. Most openers will not pull one. Buy the single, don’t chase.
| Product | Sealed Price (USD) | Expected Card Value | Avg Return | Median Outcome | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Booster Pack (1) | ~$12.57 | $18.33 | 1.38× | −$11 | Lottery ticket. 8.9% win. |
| Booster Box (24 packs) | ~$373 | $440 | 1.19× | −$222 | +EV on paper, 72.9% lose. |
| ~Break-even box | ~$440 USD | $440 | 1.0× | — | Expected value equals cost. |
| Booster Case (288 packs) | ~$4,470 | $5,279 | 1.18× | −$293 | +EV on paper, 55.4% lose. |
| ~Break-even case | ~$5,280 USD | $5,280 | 1.0× | — | Expected value equals cost. |
The +EV trap, explained: A box at ~$373 sits below the mathematical break-even of $440, so the average box is a small win (1.19×). But the average is not what happens to you. Strip out the grail, the Diamond DON!! and the mangas — the cards 72.9% of boxes never contain — and the typical box is a clear loss. The median box returns −$222; the median case −$293. This is a raffle where the prize pool is real but your ticket almost always loses.

Stress-test the maths yourself: switch between a single pack, a 24-pack box and a full 288-pack case, choose the price you'd actually pay, set a “sift floor” so worthless bulk counts as $0, and edit any pull-rate assumption. Every change re-runs a live Monte Carlo in your browser. The estimated Diamond DON!! and the ~$8,100 Rocks grail are what drag the average above break-even — lower their rates and the edge disappears, which is the whole point.

Live Monte Carlo simulation in your browser. Card prices: PriceCharting (USD), updated 2026-09-03. Pull rates are from a coarse 3-case (~1,000-pack) community sample; two DON!! tiers are price estimates and fully editable above — treat every figure as a planning estimate, not a guarantee. SGD shown at ~S$1.28/USD.
Read This First: How Coarse These Numbers Are
These figures are directional, not precise. Three caveats matter before you act on them:
- Tiny sample. The pull rates come from just three cases (~1,000 packs). That is fine for common hit tiers but statistically thin for the grail, manga and DON!! tiers that drive most of the EV — a single extra grail in the sample would swing the mean noticeably.
- Two tiers are pure estimates. The Gold DON!! (~$25) and the Platinum / Diamond DON!! (~$850) have no established market price. We use pre-release estimates, tagged (est.) everywhere they appear. The Diamond DON!! estimate alone contributes $2.95 of the $18.33 EV per pack, so if that ~$850 figure is wrong, the whole box/case verdict shifts.
- Early, volatile prices. Everything is priced within days of the 28 August 2026 launch. New-set prices routinely soften 25–40% over the first few months, which would push box and case from “barely +EV” to negative.
Bottom line: trust the shape of the result — a high-variance lottery where the mean is dragged up by a few grails — far more than the exact multiplier. If the Diamond DON!! is worth less than $850, or the grail rate is lower than 0.3 per case, the box and case slip underwater.
Card Prices by Hit Tier

Every 12-card pack also carries about $1.20 of bulk value (commons, uncommons, regular rares and the foil), which is the floor an opener always gets before any hit.
Chase Cards: Top 10 by Value
The value ceiling is extreme and top-heavy: the Rocks.D.Xebec grail at ~$8,100 is worth more than a full sealed case on its own. Below it, the four Four Emperors mangas ($1,100–$1,440), the Diamond DON!! (est. ~$850), and the Gold SPs ($305–$459) make up the rest of the jackpot pool. Miss all of those — as most openers do — and the box is a loss.
Expected Value Per Pack
Weighting each hit tier’s pool average by its per-pack rate (from the 3-case sample) and adding the $1.20 bulk floor gives the expected value of a single 12-card pack. Note how concentrated it is: the grail and the two estimated DON!! tiers alone carry a large share.
| Component | Pull Rate | Pool Avg (USD) | EV Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grail — Pirates-Crew Super Alt-Art | 0.104% | $5,183.12 | $5.40 |
| Platinum (Diamond) DON!! (est.) | 0.347% | $850 (est.) | $2.95 |
| Gold SP (Special Art) | 0.694% | $370.92 | $2.58 |
| Manga — Four Emperors | 0.174% | $1,298.82 | $2.26 |
| Alt Art / Parallel (mid) | 3.47% | $40.79 | $1.42 |
| Alt-Art Leader | 1.39% | $85.39 | $1.19 |
| Secret Rare (Loki) | 1.74% | $44.74 | $0.78 |
| Treasure Rare | 0.347% | $83 | $0.29 |
| Panda Man Alt Art | 2.43% | $8.09 | $0.20 |
| Gold DON!! (est.) | 0.347% | $25 (est.) | $0.09 |
| Rare / no-hit floor | 89.0% | $0 | $0.00 |
| Bulk (commons / uncommons / rares / foil) | 100% | $1.2 | $1.20 |
Key observations from this table:
- The grail alone contributes $5.40 of the $18.33 EV — nearly 30% of the entire per-pack value rides on a card that appears roughly once every three cases. Remove it and the box drops below break-even instantly.
- The two estimated DON!! tiers add $3.04 — almost all of it from the ~$850 Diamond DON!! (est.). This is the single most fragile input in the whole model.
- The Gold SPs and mangas add $4.84 — real, but rare. The consistent tiers you actually pull (AA, leaders, SEC, Panda Man) only sum to about $3.59/pack.
Monte Carlo: Win vs Loss Odds
The EV table above gives averages. What actually happens to individual openers is driven by variance — and in OP17 the variance is enormous because a single grail dwarfs everything else. The charts below show results from 100,000 simulated openings, drawing from the actual card pool prices and pull rates.
Each bar = $50 profit/loss range. ··· represents an empty gap in outcomes. The +$7,750–$8,100 spike is a Rocks grail landing in the box. 100,000 simulated openings. Prices from PriceCharting One Piece data (USD), September 2026.
Win / Loss summary across all formats
| Scenario | Cost | Win % | Loss % | Median P/L | P5 (bad luck) | P95 (good luck) | Avg Return |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pack — market (~$12.57) | $13 | 8.9% | 91.1% | −$11 | −$11 | +$22 | 1.38× |
| Box — market (~$372.50) | $373 | 27.1% | 72.9% | −$222 | −$344 | +$1,098 | 1.19× |
| Case — market (~$4,470) | $4,470 | 44.6% | 55.4% | −$293 | −$2,596 | +$8,308 | 1.18× |
P5 = the outcome in the worst 5% of openings. P95 = the outcome in the best 5%. Win = profit > $0. Simulation: 100,000 runs, seed 42.
What these numbers mean in practice:
- The box is 1.19× on average but loses 72.9% of the time, with a median of −$222. The average is a mirage created by the +$1,098 top-5% outcomes — a grail or manga landing in your 24 packs.
- The case (1.18×) still loses 55.4% of the time. Buying a whole case improves your odds of hitting something big — P95 reaches +$8,308 — but the median case still loses −$293, and the bad-luck P5 is a brutal −$2,596.
- Single packs are the purest lottery: 8.9% win, median −$11. You are almost always buying $1.20 of bulk for ~$12.57.
- The whole distribution is bimodal: a fat cluster of losses, then a thin, far-right tail where the grail lands. There is no comfortable middle.
The Break-Even Price
If the expected value per pack is $18.33 USD, the break-even prices for each format are:
Sealed prices ($373 box, $4,470 case) sit below break-even ($440 / $5,280), which is the only reason box and case read as positive EV. That margin is thin and rests entirely on the grail and DON!! estimates — a mild price softening or a lower true grail rate erases it.
Sensitivity to the grail & Diamond DON!! estimates
| Scenario | EV per Pack | Break-even Box (USD) | Break-even Case (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current prices (September 2026) | $18.33 | ~$440 | ~$5,280 |
| Diamond DON!! worth $0 (est. removed) | ~$15.38 | ~$369 | ~$4,430 |
| Grail −50% (~$4,050) | ~$15.63 | ~$375 | ~$4,501 |
| Grail + Diamond DON!! both removed | ~$9.98 | ~$240 | ~$2,874 |
The fragility is stark. Zero out just the estimated Diamond DON!! and the box break-even drops to ~$369 — essentially level with the ~$373 sealed price, wiping out the edge. Remove both the grail and the Diamond DON!! and EV falls to ~$9.98, pushing box and case firmly negative. The “+EV” verdict is real but paper-thin.
What You Should Actually Do
If you want a specific card
Buy the single. Use the tcgTalk price comparison to find the best current price. Alt arts, SPs, mangas, the Diamond DON!! and the Rocks grail are unmapped and land 1–4 per box at random, so pulling a named card costs far more on average than buying it once prices settle. The Rocks grail at ~$8,100 is worth more than a full sealed case — you cannot realistically open toward it.
If you want to open packs
Open OP17 for the experience, not the return. The case is the least-bad way to open (1.18× average, 44.6% win) because 288 packs give you the most chances at a grail or manga — but the median case still loses −$293, and a bad-luck case is down −$2,596. Single boxes are a coin flip at best (27.1% win, median −$222), and single packs are pure lottery tickets. If you open, do it because the 4th-anniversary set is fun to crack — the Rocks archetype, the Panda Man easter eggs, the DON!! hunt — and treat any grail as a bonus, not a plan.
If you are buying sealed for investment
The case for holding OP17 sealed rests on future appreciation, not current pull value — the EV edge over sealed cost is thin and depends on two estimated DON!! prices. As a 4th-anniversary, simultaneous-worldwide-release set with a self-contained Rocks archetype, OP17 has genuine long-term collector appeal, but sealed prices were already elevated at launch ($400–$650 boxes in the first wave). Buy sealed to hold, not to open for profit.
If you already have cards to sell
The Rocks.D.Xebec grail (~$8,100) and the Four Emperors mangas ($1,100–$1,440) are the crown jewels — if you pulled one, it is worth more than everything else you opened combined. New-set prices for premium cards typically soften 25–40% within a few months of release, so acting sooner rather than later tends to yield better prices. The Gold SPs and alt-art leaders are the mid-tier hits worth listing; Panda Man alts and bulk are set-completion filler.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it worth opening OP17 packs, boxes or cases?
On paper box (~1.19×) and case (~1.18×) are marginally positive EV, but it is a lottery: the median box loses −$222 (72.9% of boxes lose) and the median case loses −$293 (55.4% of cases lose). The positive average is driven almost entirely by the ~$8,100 Rocks grail, the ~$850 Diamond DON!! (est.), the ~$1,441 mangas and the Gold SPs. Buy the single, don’t chase.
What is the most valuable OP17 card?
The Rocks.D.Xebec Pirates-Crew Super Alt-Art (OP17-118) at roughly $8,100 USD, followed by the Monkey.D.Luffy version (OP17-079) around $2,266. The Four Emperors mangas (Shanks $1,441, Edward Newgate $1,299, Kaido $1,280, Charlotte Linlin $1,175) are the next tier.
Why is a positive-EV box still a bad bet?
Because the mean is not the median. One ~$8,100 grail or ~$850 Diamond DON!! lifts the average far above the typical outcome. 72.9% of boxes and 55.4% of cases lose money — only the lucky minority that hits a grail-tier card pulls ahead. The distribution is a raffle: most tickets lose, a few win big.
How reliable are these OP17 pull rates and prices?
Coarse. The sample is only three cases (~1,000 packs), thin for the rare tiers. Two tiers — Gold DON!! (~$25) and Platinum/Diamond DON!! (~$850) — have no market price and are estimates, tagged (est.) throughout. Prices are early post-launch figures that will move. Trust the shape (high-variance, barely +EV) more than the exact multiplier.
What is the break-even price for an OP17 box and case?
About $440 for a box (24 packs) and $5,280 for a case (288 packs), from an EV of $18.33/pack. Current sealed prices ($373 / $4,470) sit just below, giving the thin positive-EV edge — an edge that disappears if the Diamond DON!! estimate or the grail rate is lower than assumed.
Should I buy singles or open packs for OP17?
Buy singles for any specific card — pulling a named alt art, manga, DON!! or the grail costs far more on average than buying it. Open OP17 only for the experience: the Rocks archetype, the Panda Man secret alts, and the Gold / Diamond DON!! hunt. Treat any grail as a bonus, never the plan.
