The Hobbit Collector Booster Calculator
Set how many collector packs you’re opening — type a number or tap a 12-pack box, two boxes, or a six-box case — then pick the treatment you’re chasing. The big figure is your chance of pulling at least one across your packs; the table prices every treatment at once, and the panels below handle the two things that aren’t odds at all: the guaranteed box topper, and the gold foil Smaug that nobody has pulled. All rates come from the 240-pack (20-box) sample behind our The Hobbit collector booster pull-rate page.
These rates describe collector boosters only. Play boosters use a completely different structure — one traditional-foil or special-treatment card per pack — and produce zero book covers, zero dwarven language cards and no gold foil Smaug, so none of the numbers here apply to them.
The Hobbit’s treatments are not mutually exclusive. A single pack can be a Surge Foil AND a Book Cover at the same time — and that overlap is exactly what the "Surge Foil Book Cover" chase is. So every treatment is scored on its own per-pack rate rather than being forced into one hit slot: for each row you get the chance of at least one across your packs, 1 − (1 − rate)^packs, and the expected count, rate × packs.
This is why the rates below do not add up to 100% — they sum to about 121% of packs. They are overlapping flags on the same pack, not slices of a pie. Adding them together, or normalising them, double-counts packs. The nested rows are marked: Surge Foil Book Cover sits inside both Surge Foil and Book Cover.
Pick the treatment you actually want — the big number is your chance of at least one across your pack count. Each treatment is scored independently, so picking one does not change the others.
The any-treatment figure is the measured share of packs that carried something premium (~75%), not a number derived from the independent rates — multiplying the complements would put bulk packs near 36% instead of the ~25% actually observed, because hits cluster in the same packs more than strict independence predicts.

| Classic Artist Series box topper1 per box | n/a | guaranteed | 1 | every box |
One Classic Artist Series card per complete collector box, every time. No probability is involved in getting one — only in which of the 40 cards it is.
Every collector box includes exactly one box topper from the 40-card Classic Artist Series. This is a guaranteed slot, not a pull rate — 12 packs always come with one, whatever the packs do. Best hits in the 40-card pool: The One Ring (~$1,000), Orcish Bowmasters (~$40–$50). The pool also holds Classic Artist lands like The Shire and Minas Tirith worth only a few dollars, so the slot is mostly modest and occasionally four-figure.
Gleaming Gold Foil Smaug (#0249) — 0 pulled in 240 documented packs — including a full six-box case break. There is no observed rate, so we publish none and leave it out of every number above.
All the sample supports is a ceiling: with 0 hits in 240 packs the rate is below about 1.3% per pack (95% upper bound, rule of three), which caps your 12 packs at 14%. That is an upper bound, not an estimate — the pull-rate page puts the real figure at one per many thousands of packs. Do not chase it.
1 box-equivalent at $780 per 12-pack box. What one copy of each launch-week anchor would cover, against the product you are opening. This is a break-even reference, not an expected-value estimate — we do not claim a box returns any of these.
| Card | Launch-week USD | Boxes covered per copy |
|---|---|---|
| Smaug the Wicked Worm Surge Foil Book Cover | ~$895–$1,400 | 1.5× |
| The One Ring Classic Artist box topper (foil) · box topper only | ~$1,000 | 1.3× |
| Tom Bombadil Surge Foil Showcase | ~$500 | 0.6× |
| Gollum, Riddle Master Non-foil mythic | ~$300 | 0.4× |
| Reaver Cleaver Dwarven Language (foil) | ~$250 | 0.3× |
| Aragorn & Arwen, Wed Surge Foil | ~$185 | 0.2× |
| Orcrist / Goblin Cleaver Surge Foil Showcase | ~$150 | 0.2× |
Price basis: launch-week USD, August 2026 (set released 14 Aug 2026). Pre-sale prices are inflated and openers noted they often halve within a month or two — re-check the market before you treat any of these as a break-even.
These are treatment odds, not named-card odds. A surge foil book cover lands about once per box, but it is spread across many different cards — so the chance that your one surge foil book cover is the Smaug the Wicked Worm specifically is a small fraction of the 8% tier rate. Buying the single is almost always cheaper than opening for a named card.
The 240-pack sample is creator-sourced — people who open on camera at release tend to show their luckiest boxes — so treat every rate here as an optimistic ceiling. Real-world averages likely sit a little below these figures, and the dwarven language rate in particular (creators cite nearer 1%, our sample says 5%) is the clearest example.
Rates come from 240 collector packs across 20 boxes, including a full six-box case break, and are the figures behind our pull-rate page. Wizards of the Coast does not publish official collector booster odds. Treatments are modelled as independent per-pack flags; real collation clusters hits, so a live case can over- or under-shoot. All dollar figures are pre-sale and launch-week USD and move fast — openers noted pre-sale prices are inflated and often halve within a month or two. Not financial advice, and not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
Why These Odds Don’t Add Up to 100%
Most pack calculators model a single hit slot that resolves to exactly one rarity — one card comes out, it’s either an SIR or an IR or a rare, and the rates partition the pack so they sum to 100%. That model is wrong for The Hobbit, and applying it here would produce nonsense.
The Hobbit’s treatments are not mutually exclusive. Surge foil is a finish; book cover and dragon horde are frames; dwarven language is a text treatment. A card can carry more than one at the same time — and the set’s premium chase, the surge foil book cover, is literally the overlap of two of them. That’s why the published rates add up to roughly 121% of packs, and why normalising them to 100% would be a modelling error, not a tidy-up.
So this calculator uses an independent-treatments model instead. Each treatment gets its own per-pack probability and is scored entirely on its own:
- Chance of ≥1 —
1 − (1 − rate)^packs, computed per treatment. Nothing is subtracted from anything else. - Expected count —
rate × packs, again per treatment. Across a box these can total more than the 12 packs, because one pack can satisfy several rows. - Nested rows are flagged. Surge Foil Book Cover sits inside both Surge Foil and Book Cover. The calculator marks it “overlap” so you never add it to its parents.
One pleasing check on the assumption: if surge foil (~35%) and book cover (~25%) were genuinely independent flags, their overlap would land at 0.35 × 0.25 ≈ 8.75% — and the observed surge foil book cover rate is ~8%. The independence assumption fits the data it’s built on almost exactly at that intersection.
Where independence doesn’t hold is at the other end, and we don’t paper over it. Multiplying out the complements would predict about 36% bulk packs, but the sample actually measured ~25%. Treatments cluster in the same packs more than strict independence predicts — the openers’ “big wins or big fails” effect. So the any-treatment figure in the calculator is the measured ~75%, taken directly from the pull-rate page, not derived from the per-treatment rates.
The Per-Pack Treatment Rates
A collector box is a confirmed 12 packs plus 1 box topper at roughly USD $780 at release. The premium treatments live in the final “hit” slot of each pack, which is why they’re lumpy rather than evenly spread. These are the same aggregates published on the pull-rate page:
| Treatment | Pulls / 240 | Per Pack | Base Odds | Per Box | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foil rare or mythic | every pack | 100% | every pack | ~12+ | Every collector pack has a guaranteed foil rare/mythic slot — this is the floor of a "bulk" pack, not a hit. |
| Full-art basic land | every pack | 100% | every pack | ~12 | Seasonal art, four versions of each basic exist. One per pack, guaranteed. |
| Surge Foil (any rarity) | 84 | 35% | ~1 in 2.9 | ~4 | The returning rainbow surge finish — ~84 in 240 packs. Most are surge foil commons and uncommons; the money sits in the surge foil book covers and showcases, counted separately below. |
| Book Cover treatment | 60 | 25% | ~1 in 4 | ~3 | The set’s signature worn-storybook showcase — ~60 in 240 packs, 1 to 5 per box. Most are non-foil or standard foil; one creator warned you can go boxes without a foil book card. |
| Dragon Horde treatment | 50 | 21% | ~1 in 4.8 | ~2–3 | Dragon-scale bordered showcase, regular or surge foil — ~50 in 240 packs. The dragon-frame Smaug the Magnificent ran ~$90 non-foil / ~$170 foil at launch. |
| Surge Foil Book Cover (overlap) | 19 | 8% | ~1 in 12.5 | ~1 | The premium chase treatment — ~19 in 240 packs, about one per box. This row is the OVERLAP of the Surge Foil and Book Cover rows above, not a separate category. Smaug the Wicked Worm in this treatment was the top pull of the sample at ~$895–$1,400. |
| Dwarven Language card | 12 | 5% | ~1 in 20 | ~0.5 (≈1 in 2 boxes) | Collector-exclusive Cirth-rune text treatment — ~12 in 240 packs (≈1 in 20). Creators cite figures nearer 1%, so this 5% is the optimistic end. Some boxes hit two, several hit zero. Reaver Cleaver in foil dwarven language was quoted ~$250. |
| Signed art card (Middle-earth Art Series) | 4 | 2% | ~1 in 50 | ~0.2 (≈1 in 5 boxes) | Artist-signed version of the art-card slot — only ~4 in 240 packs. No numbered serials confirmed in this set. |
| Gleaming Gold Foil Smaug (#0249) | 0 | 0 observed | no rate published | <0.01 (ultra-rare) | The set jackpot, listed at $29,999.99. Zero pulled in 240 documented packs including a full six-box case break — the pull-rate page calls it effectively unpullable, realistically one per many thousands of packs. We publish no rate for it and it is excluded from every number above. Do not chase it. |
| Classic Artist Series box topper | 1 per box | n/a | guaranteed | 1 | Every collector box includes exactly one box topper from the 40-card Classic Artist Series. This is a guaranteed slot, not a pull rate — 12 packs always come with one, whatever the packs do. |
Reading the table: roughly 1 in 4 packs was bulk — a foil rare and a scene card, no surge foil, book cover, dragon horde or dwarven card — so about 3 in 4 carried something premium. Over a single 12-pack box that works out to a near-certain run of shiny cards (~99% for at least one surge foil, ~97% for a book cover), a ~63% shot at the premium surge foil book cover, and a ~46% shot at a dwarven language card.
Box Toppers: Guaranteed, Not Odds
Every collector box includes exactly one box topper from the 40-card Classic Artist Series. There is no probability involved in getting one, which is why the calculator reports toppers as a guaranteed count derived from your pack count — complete boxes in, toppers out — and never as a percentage. Open 9 packs and you get none; open 24 and you get exactly two.
The lottery is which card it is. The pool runs from The One Ring at around $1,000 and Orcish Bowmasters at ~$40–$50 down to Classic Artist lands like The Shire and Minas Tirith worth only a few dollars. That makes the topper a real but wildly variable part of a box’s value floor: mostly modest, occasionally four-figure. It also means a single lucky topper can cover a box on its own — The One Ring alone is worth more than the ~$780 box.
The Gold Foil Smaug: The Rate We Won’t Publish
The Borderless Gleaming Gold Foil Smaug the Magnificent (#0249) is the set jackpot, listed at $29,999.99. Across 240 documented packs — 20 boxes, including a continuous six-box case break — zero were pulled.
So we publish no rate for it, and the calculator excludes it from every odds figure. Inventing a per-pack probability from zero observations would be fabrication. What the sample does support is a ceiling: with 0 hits in 240 packs, the 95% upper confidence bound on the rate is about 1.25% per pack (the rule of three, 3/n) — which caps a single 12-pack box at roughly 14% and your whole 240-pack sample at ~95%. Read that as “no more likely than,” not “about.” The pull-rate page is blunter: the card is effectively unpullable, realistically one per many thousands of packs.
The practical conclusion is the same either way. At ~$780 per box, even dozens of boxes barely move your odds, and you’d spend well past the card’s ~$30,000 value in product and most likely still not hit it. Do not chase it. Buy the ~$114–$200 headliner treatment, or monitor secondary listings and buy from someone who already pulled one.
Break-Even & The Bulk Pack Problem
A collector box is ~USD $780 for 12 packs and a topper — about $65 per pack. The honest counterweight to all the chase math above is that roughly 25% of packs are bulk: a foil rare and a scene card, nothing premium. In a 12-pack box that’s about 3 packs that produce nothing you’d put in a binder.
The break-even table in the calculator shows what one copy of each launch-week anchor would cover against the product you’re opening. It is a reference, not an expected-value model — we make no claim that a box returns any of these:
- Smaug the Wicked Worm surge foil book cover (~$895–$1,400) — clears a box on its own, roughly 1.5×. But surge foil book covers land only ~1 per box and are spread across many different cards.
- The One Ring Classic Artist box topper (~$1,000) — clears a box, and comes from the guaranteed slot rather than a pack.
- Tom Bombadil surge foil showcase (~$500) — about two-thirds of a box.
- Reaver Cleaver dwarven language foil (~$250) — about a third of a box, at ~1 dwarven card per two boxes.
- Aragorn & Arwen, Wed surge foil (~$185) — roughly a quarter of a box.
Price basis matters here. Every dollar figure on this page is launch-week USD, August 2026 (set released 14 Aug 2026). Openers noted that pre-sale prices are inflated and often halve within a month or two, so a break-even that looks reachable at launch can quietly stop being reachable. Combine that with a creator-sourced sample that reads as an optimistic ceiling, and the honest read is the pull-rate page’s: collector boxes rarely pay for themselves. Open them because you want to rip surge foils and book covers.
Treatment Odds vs Named-Card Odds
The calculator prices treatments, not individual cards, and the gap between the two is where most pack-opening disappointment lives. The ~8% surge foil book cover rate is the chance a pack carries any surge foil book cover — and that treatment spans many cards. The odds your one-per-box surge foil book cover is the Smaug the Wicked Worm specifically are a small fraction of 8%.
The same applies down the ladder: any dwarven language card is ~5% per pack, but the Reaver Cleaver one is far longer odds. If you want a named card — a Standard staple like Inside Information (~$20), Gollum, Riddle Master (~$300), or a specific showcase — buying the single is almost always cheaper than the packs you’d open to find it. Use the treatment odds to decide whether to open at all; use singles when you want one particular card.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the odds of a surge foil book cover?
About 8% per pack (~1 in 12.5, about one per box), so roughly 63% over a single 12-pack collector box, 86% over two boxes and ~99.8% over a six-box case. A coin-flip takes only about 9 packs. Remember it’s the overlap of the surge foil and book cover rows — not an extra category — and it’s any surge foil book cover, not the Smaug one.
What is the dwarven language card odds per box?
~5% per pack (≈1 in 20) in our sample, about 0.5 per box — a ~46% chance of at least one in a single box and ~71% across two. Creators cite figures nearer 1%, and the sample is creator-sourced, so treat 5% as the optimistic end. Set your pack count above and pick Dwarven Language card to see it live.
What are the Gleaming Gold Foil Smaug odds?
Unpublished, because it went 0 for 240. The only defensible statement is a ceiling of ~1.25% per pack (95% upper bound from zero hits in 240 packs), capping one box at ~14%. Realistically it’s one per many thousands of packs — effectively unpullable. Do not chase it.
Why don’t the treatment rates add up to 100%?
Because they’re overlapping flags on the same pack, not slices of a pie — a pack can be a surge foil and a book cover, and that overlap is the premium chase. The rates sum to ~121% of packs for exactly that reason, and the calculator scores each treatment independently rather than normalising them.
How many box toppers will I get?
Exactly one per complete box — guaranteed, never a probability. The calculator derives the count from your pack count: 12 packs give one, 24 give two, 9 give none. Which of the 40 Classic Artist Series cards you get is the lottery, from The One Ring (~$1,000) down to a few-dollar land.
Do collector boxes break even?
Rarely. ~$780 per box, ~25% of packs bulk, and the top-end anchors you’d need are tiny slices of a large card pool. One surge foil book cover Smaug (~$895–$1,400) or One Ring topper (~$1,000) clears a box, but neither is something to plan around — and both figures are launch-week prices that often halve within a month or two.
Disclaimer: Odds are computed from a 240-pack collector booster sample across 20 boxes, including a full six-box case break — community estimates, as Wizards of the Coast does not publish official collector booster pull rates. The sample is creator-sourced and reads as an optimistic ceiling. Treatments are modelled as independent per-pack flags that may co-occur; real collation clusters hits, so a live case can over- or under-shoot. The Gleaming Gold Foil Smaug has no published rate and is excluded from all odds. All dollar figures are launch-week USD, August 2026 (set released 14 Aug 2026) and move fast — verify current prices before buying or selling. This is not financial advice.
