Why OP01 Romance Dawn Cards Hold Value

Romance Dawn is the founding set of the English One Piece TCG, released in July 2023. It introduced the game to the global market and established the collector tier that still dominates the high-end today. Three factors make OP01 cards uniquely durable in value:

  • First-set prestige: OP01 is to One Piece TCG what Base Set is to Pokémon — the historical anchor of the entire game. Collectors prize debut-set cards as permanent artifacts.
  • Iconic characters: Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Shanks, Kaido — some of the most recognisable characters in anime and manga history. Demand from non-TCG fans drives prices beyond what playability alone would justify.
  • Inaugural tournament promos: The first season of official One Piece TCG championships produced Top 8 and winner promos that will never be reprinted. Supply is permanently fixed in the single digits per event.

Graded Price Breakdown — Where the Premiums Are

OP01 has some of the most compelling graded premiums in the game. Here's a full condition breakdown for the top three cards:

CardRawPSA 10CGC 10BGS 10SGC 10
Roronoa Zoro [Top 8] OP01-025$5,078$11,424$9,139$10,522$6,854
Shanks [Serial] OP01-120$3,438$13,600$10,880$18,195$8,160
Nami [Manga] OP01-016$2,664$3,877$3,101$4,318$2,326

Key observations:

  • Shanks [Serial] has the most extreme graded premium in the set — BGS 10 at SGD $18,195 vs raw $3,438 is a 5.3x multiplier. With so few copies in existence, a confirmed gem grade is a genuinely rare asset.
  • Zoro [Top 8] graded premiums are strong but more moderate — PSA 10 at $11,424 is a 2.2x raw multiple. The BGS 10 at $10,522 is slightly lower than PSA 10, reflecting PSA's stronger brand recognition in this segment.
  • Nami [Manga] shows consistent premiums across all four grading services (46%–62% over raw), making it one of the most grading-efficient cards in OP01 relative to its raw price.

Japanese vs English Prices — OP01

The Japanese Romance Dawn set launched in December 2022, roughly seven months before the English release. JP and EN cards share card numbers but are traded as separate products on the secondary market. For most OP01 cards, EN commands a large premium — but Shanks [Serial] is the notable exception.

Note: The three Shanks variants (Serial, Manga Alt, Manga PRB01) all share card number OP01-120. JP equivalents exist for each, but are tracked separately in the JP database, so only the Serial is included in the comparison below.

CardEN Raw (SGD)JP Raw (SGD)EN PremiumJP Volume
Roronoa Zoro [Top 8] OP01-025$5,078$1,700+199%16

Nami [Manga] OP01-016$2,664$610+337%554
Kaido [Top 8] OP01-094$2,401$747+221%11

Perona [Championship 2024 Top Player] OP01-077$1,055$30+3417%28
Killer [Championship 2023 Top Player] OP01-039$1,020$13+7746%7

Key observations:

  • Shanks [Serial] is the only OP01 card where JP outprices EN — JP $3,808 vs EN $3,438, a -10% EN "premium". The JP Serial has an independent collector base and its extremely low print run carries the same scarcity premium globally.
  • Nami [Manga] has the deepest JP market in the set (554 JP transactions vs 296 EN) but EN still commands a +337% premium. Collectors who want the narrative feel of Nami's art can access a JP version at $610 — less than a quarter of the EN price.
  • Tournament promos (Yamato, Perona, Killer) show extreme EN premiums of +1,125% to +7,746%. JP championship promos from OP01 exist but represent a completely separate tournament ecosystem — JP promos have their own JP collector base, while EN promos are exclusive to the EN circuit with no crossover supply.

Tournament Promos — OP01's Most Scarce Cards

The inaugural season of One Piece TCG official play produced four promo tiers from OP01:

Roronoa Zoro [Top 8] OP01-025 — SGD $5,078 raw

The crown jewel of OP01, awarded to only the top 8 finishers at inaugural season championship events. Total copies across all events number in the low dozens globally. Zoro is the #2 most popular One Piece character and his status as the series' defining swordsman keeps collector demand permanently elevated. PSA 10 at SGD $11,424 shows this card grades well — tournament promos are typically well-handled given their ceremonial nature.

Kaido [Top 8] OP01-094 — SGD $2,401 raw

The same Top 8 distribution model as Zoro, but Kaido trades at a ~53% discount. This gap reflects character popularity rather than rarity — both have equally limited supply. Kaido's arc resolved in Wano, which can soften long-term demand compared to Zoro's ongoing storyline. For contrarians, this price gap is notable.

Yamato [Top 64] OP01-121 — SGD $1,360 raw

Top 64 promos have meaningfully higher supply than Top 8 — 64 copies per tournament versus 8. Volume of 20 recorded transactions reflects reasonable liquidity for a promo card. Yamato's popularity as a fan-favourite character from Wano supports the $1,000+ price floor despite higher supply.

Championship Top Player Promos — SGD $1,020–$1,055

Perona and Killer championship promos sit at the $1,000–$1,055 range with very low transaction volumes (3–4 recorded sales). Thin liquidity at these prices means market pricing is more volatile — a single transaction can move the quoted price significantly.

Manga Alternate Arts — Shanks & Nami

OP01 features multiple Shanks variants and one of the most iconic Nami manga arts in the game:

Shanks [Serial] OP01-120 — SGD $3,438 raw

Distributed through a limited serialised campaign with an extremely low print run. The serial nature means each copy is literally numbered — making it more akin to a trophy card than a standard chase card. 39 recorded transactions provide reasonable market depth. Graded premiums are extraordinary: BGS 10 at SGD $18,195 makes this the highest graded value in the entire OP01 set.

Shanks [Manga Alternate Art] OP01-120 — SGD $2,033 raw

The standard manga alt version of Shanks, featuring Eiichiro Oda's original manga artwork. 170 transactions make this one of the most liquid high-value OP01 cards — easier to buy and sell than the Serial version. No graded price data is available, suggesting graded copies are rarely sold separately from the raw market.

Shanks [Manga PRB01] OP01-120 — SGD $1,825 raw

A foil version released through the Premium Booster set, using the same OP01-120 card number. At SGD $1,825, it offers the most accessible entry to a Shanks manga alt. Verify the specific version before buying — the PRB01 foil is a distinct product from the standard manga alt.

Nami [Manga] OP01-016 — SGD $2,664 raw

The standout manga alt of the set. 296 transactions — the second-highest volume in the top 10 — confirms this is a highly liquid card at its price tier. Grading returns are strong across all services, and the BGS 10 premium of 62% makes it one of the better grading propositions in OP01.

Buying Tips for OP01 Romance Dawn Cards

Volume as a Liquidity Signal

The Boa Hancock [SP] OP01-078 leads the set in transaction volume at 373 — nearly 4x the Nami [Manga] at 296. High volume means tighter spreads and easier exits. Low-volume promos like Perona (3 sales) and Killer (4 sales) carry more pricing uncertainty — the "market price" may be based on one or two trades.

Three Shanks Variants Require Due Diligence

Serial ($3,438), Manga Alternate Art ($2,033), and Manga PRB01 ($1,825) all share the OP01-120 card number. Confirm exactly which version you are transacting before buying — the price difference between the Serial and PRB01 is over SGD $1,600.

Grading the Shanks Serial Is High-Conviction

The 5.3x graded premium on the Shanks [Serial] is exceptional. If you can source a raw copy in gem-quality condition, the BGS 10 valuation at SGD $18,195 represents a compelling case for submitting. The key risk is pop — check PSA and BGS population reports before assuming gem grades are scarce.

OP01 as a Long-Term Hold

The "Base Set effect" in TCG collecting is well documented — debut sets hold value disproportionately well over time as nostalgia compounds. OP01 Romance Dawn is already nearly 3 years old in the English market. For collectors with a 5+ year horizon, quality OP01 promos have a strong structural argument for appreciation.
